Searching for your perfect home in Toronto’s West End? You may just find it while browsing our latest listings right here.
Don’t Say Roncesvalles!
The first thing to note is that residents call Roncesvalles “Roncy.” Knowing this is critical – because if you tell anyone that you live in “Roncesvalles”, everyone will think you’re making it up. (We understand the temptation; it really is an enviable place to be.)
Roncesvalles is the technical name on Google Maps. Visitors, the in-laws, and yes, the occasional blog writer or even newspaper columnist will also use the “proper” term. But if you want to fit in with the locals, it’s “Roncy” all the way.
Where is Roncesvalles (- ahem, Roncy)? Geographically, it’s located just north of the Gardiner Expressway and is bordered by Roncesvalles Avenue, Lansdowne Street, Queen Street West, and Bloor Street West. Now that’s out of the way, we can begin to try to describe the trendy and exciting yet peaceful and family-friendly community that we know and love.

Nowhere Compares to Roncy
Whatever your background, whatever your lifestyle preferences, you are sure to feel right at home in Roncy. There aren’t many places that are everything to everyone. However, with its small, village-like feel in the heart of Canada’s busiest and most exciting city, Roncy really does have it all.
Unique, independent Roncesvalles shops and restaurants line the neighbourhood streets, giving residents plenty of opportunities to indulge in a little retail therapy whenever they like. There are coffee shops everywhere, and they are iconic. You’ll find the big-name hangouts if that’s what you prefer.
Even better, you’ll find a ton of unusual, creative, and downright artistic hotspots to get your daily caffeine. Even if you’re not a coffee addict, you will not be able to resist the cozy and warm ambiance – the aroma of delicious and fresh-baked treats is sure to lure you in.
Postcard Worthy Roncy
If an unbeatable shopping and dining experience and overall too-cool-to-describe atmosphere weren’t enough, Roncy is also one of the West End’s most picturesque neighbourhoods.
The area is known for its historic architecture and beautifully maintained buildings, and residents certainly love their colourful gardens around here. A walk around the block in the springtime can feel like visiting a botanical garden. There is also a definite European-like vibe to the community, which is evident in the various bakeries and events throughout the neighbourhood.
Greenery is everywhere, from the wide, tree-lined streets to the breathtaking parks. Sorauren Avenue Park is one of our top community highlights, with numerous sports fields, a farmer’s market, and an off-leash dog park. Baseball, soccer, and tennis keep kids off their screens during the warmer months.
Fall in Roncy is particularly festive, as it’s home to Toronto’s most famous annual Pumpkin Parade. Hundreds of jack o’lanterns line the various pathways through the park, a sight that draws countless visitors every year. It also gives you a chance to spring back from any candy-induced coma, since the event takes place on November 1, the day after Halloween. In the winter, volunteers maintain free ice rinks at the park to encourage even more fun and camaraderie!
Sorauren Avenue Park is by far the largest park in Roncesvalles, but it’s not the only place where you and your family can escape to nature. Smaller and potentially less busy options include Charles G Williams Park and MacGregor Playground. If you ever wanted to spend an entire day immersed in nature, High Park is a short stroll away.
A Family-Friendly Environment
Roncy is practically the dictionary definition of family-friendly, with wide, peaceful streets that are welcoming to parents with strollers. Rain or shine, residents of all ages will be out and about to explore the neighbourhood. With so much to do, the local kids and teens may actually spend more time outside playing with their friends than inside playing video games – a welcome sight to see.
Now, don’t tell the kids this part, but Roncy also has fantastic schools that are conveniently close by. Enrollment in public schools is based on catchment area – options may include St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School, Fern Avenue Junior and Senior Public School, and Howard Junior Public School, which consistently earns high rankings from the Fraser Institute. When relocating, your local real estate agent can help you find a postal code with access to the schools of your choice.
