Where are the million-dollar homes?

Do you have a million dollars to spend but nothing to buy? Welcome to Toronto! Most starter homes close to downtown are well over a million dollars, and yet, the million-dollar mark is a very common budget for first-time homebuyers because you don’t need the full 20% down payment if you buy for 999,999 or less. Let’s get this straight. One million dollars is a whole lot of money. There’s no question that it should be easier to buy a beautiful home for this small fortune. There are still neighbourhoods in Toronto where you can do this. Here are our top three:

Weston Village

My personal favourite. Weston village will be as popular as the junction in ten years. Mark my words. It has beautiful Victorian homes and is within walking distance to the UP express station (Lawrence and Weston), which takes you straight downtown in about 15 minutes. It feels very far from the city centre, but so did the junction ten years ago.

Caledonia Fairbank and Keelsdale

Lovers of walkable neighbourhoods may be a bit disappointed here, but this is a great pocket of relatively affordable houses close to a lot of future transit. Geographically, this neighbourhood is roughly defined as a large square with Rogers rd on the south, Eglinton to the North, Dufferin to the East and Keele to the West. It is very close to St. Clair and Caledonia, which is a lovely walkable neighbourhood. The Eglinton Crosstown is going in along Eglinton very soon. For a beautiful, quiet walk, you can walk the whole span of Prospect Cemetery.

Crescent Town

Crescent town sits just north of the Danforth at Victoria Park station, right before Scarborough. It is within walking distance to the Danforth and only a ten-minute drive to the beach. It has a lot of small bungalows and two-storey houses that are perfect starter homes.
