If you ever want to spark a lively debate and a lot of heated opinions, there’s an easy way to do it. Just bring up Parkdale in Toronto, and even dare to suggest it as a great place to settle in and raise a family.
For people new to the area (or those with preconceived notions), Parkdale is the ‘hood you only pass by if you absolutely must to get from Roncesvalles to Queen West.
At the Kim Kehoe Real Estate Team, we also have some pretty strong feelings about Parkdale, all of them positive. In fact, we absolutely love it here! We come by these contrarian opinions honestly.
Kim has worked in the area for more than two decades and has helped many clients see the beauty and heart this neighbourhood offers. Team members Sam and Robyn have also lived there for many years, and it will always remain close to our hearts.
What is the appeal? In this post, we’ll shine yet another well-deserved spotlight on Parkdale.
Parkdale is just one of several stunning neighbourhoods in Toronto’s West End. Get the full tour of all of our favourite communities in Your Complete Guide to West End Toronto Real Estate.
The People of Parkdale
For a relatively small area, Parkdale boasts a large population, and it’s one of the most diverse neighbourhoods we know of. Whenever we say that “there’s a lot to love” about a community, it’s almost always because of the people.
In Parkdale, the community combines multiple ethnic and financial backgrounds in the most harmonious way imaginable. A neighbourhood with vastly different values and lifestyles, and these communities are not at odds with each other (for the most part)? Parkdale really is proof that the impossible is possible!
In true Parkdale fashion, residents here care and watch over each other. A classic example is back a few years ago when the food bank was running low. A few Instagram posts later, and everyone rallied until its shelves were overflowing again. To outsiders, this compassionate activism may be surprising. To anyone who knows the community, it’s just who we are.

Architecture
Buildings may not be people, but in Parkdale, they sure do have a ton of character. If you love the majestic sight of old Victorian homes, Parkdale is your place.
Some of the classic mansions have been converted into rental units, and even the older buildings with some wear and tear still showcase stunning architectural detail. Over the years, many of these homes and buildings have been lovingly renovated and restored. Today, they’re modern, comfortable, spacious, and yet, they still pay tribute to their heritage.
Calling any area “affordable” might be a stretch in today’s Toronto market. That said, houses in Parkdale tend to be less expensive than in other neighbourhoods. This makes it a premium choice for first-time buyers just getting into the market.
The availability of these gorgeous historic homes also makes it an ideal place for families who want to upgrade. If you keep your eyes open, you could soon have an opportunity to get more square footage and a bigger backyard for your lounging and entertainment pleasure.
Just compare:
- Downtown, you need a massive budget; otherwise your options are essentially limited to condos, with cramped quarters, and plenty of crowds and noise.
- In Parkdale, you get potentially more living space, tons of convenience, a supportive and vibrant community, and scenic, picturesque surroundings. This is the clear winner as far as we are concerned.

Bars and Restaurants
With a fantastic selection of small kitchens and innovative restaurants, Parkdale is the place to be for all foodies! You don’t have to go far to find whatever flavour you’re craving. Mexican, Caribbean, Filipino, and Tibetan flavours are all right here in the neighbourhood.
A few of our favourite eateries include Molkagtez Mexican Cuisine, Shambhala Kitchen, Namaste Tibetan Kitchen, and Ali’s West Indian Roti Shop. At Easy Restaurant, the Huevos Rancheros are worth lining up for. Rhino Bar & Grill is a great place to sample some local beers, especially during patio season.
BB’s has earned coveted Michelin recognition due to its creative and fabulous menu. Last but not least, for the absolute best and most authentic diner experience, head over to Skyline Restaurant.

A Scenic and Thriving Environment
It’s hard to say what we love more about Parkdale, the people or the environment. The sense of community is incomparable, and there are plenty of shops, restaurants, services, and little galleries to keep you engaged and entertained.
To top it all off, the scenic beauty is out of this world. This is hardly surprising since Parkdale is bordered by High Park, one of Toronto’s most beautiful and sought-after green spaces.
If that’s not enough, there’s also close proximity to the lake. From nearly anywhere in Parkdale, you can take an easy fifteen-minute walk to the waterfront trail. To sum it all up, Parkdale is a magical neighbourhood. If you’ve been lucky enough to live there, nothing else needs to be said!
